Student voice has three levels at the Strathalbyn Middle Campus: · Students are provided with opportunities to negotiate their learning activities and assessment criteria and tasks during the course of the year. They are encouraged to follow paths of interest and are able to present their learning in a variety of forums and ways, through negotiation with their teachers. Student Formal presentations at Year 7/8 and the Independent Project at Year 9 provide outstanding opportunities for student to show their learning. · Class meetings are an important part of student voice. All classes have meetings at which students can raise and discuss issues of concern or interest and ideas for development. Student representatives then bring the topics raised to the Student Forum. · The Student Forum is a group of students from across Years 7-9 who self nominate to provide student leadership in the Middle Campus. The focus of this group is on solutions to issues, ideas for improvement to the site, student representation in decision-making and fundraising for charities.
The students in years 10 – 12 have a Student Board that meets weekly. Each Year level is represented. Students are able to nominate themselves for services on the Board but must do so on the understanding of total commitment to the Board and School. The Board has full knowledge of, and contributes to, the way in which the school operates, including financial aspects, staffing and facilities. Decision-making regarding school operations is also part of the Board function.
The Board is involved in the management and organisation of functions such as Open Night, and Presentation Night and the Formal The Board is responsible for working on the students’ behalf in terms of improving school conditions and grievance procedures. A member of the Board is also a member of the Governing Council.
