Career counselling may take a variety of forms ranging from using tools and testing to try to formulate career intentions through to action planning a pathway to a particular career.
Eastern Fleurieu School has elements of Work Education and Career Education embedded in the R-12 curriculum. In this way all students begin to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to understand what areas of employment might suit them and what is required to achieve that goal.
Programmed Career Education. Particular elements of our program response to this important area are:
Program Achieve. Aims to enhance self-confidence and resilience.
Work Education: All students are expected to study a semester of Work Education in either year 10 or 11.
Work Experience: Students may do up to 20 days work experience a year. The school offers block release (all year 10 and 11 students may participate) three times per year. Students may however negotiate work experience at any time.
Vocational Education and Training. Students can access these work based learning programs in a variety of ways;
- VET embedded into mainstream school subjects such as Home Economics, Tourism, and viticulture.
- TAFE courses may be taken part- time and combined with part-time schooling.
- School based traineeships. Students are employed part time and attend school part-time.
Alternative Programmes. Small groups of students work in areas that suit their particular needs. Monarto Zoo, Small Motors and School to Work programmes are past examples.
Personalised Career Education. Students may make appointments for individual career guidance at any time by seeing the school counsellor Jen Griffin. She is located next to the community library (parents are welcome to attend)

Assistance is available to:
- Form career goals. Allow at least 30 minutes initially and some follow on research.
- Plan a pathway to a career. Allow at least 15 minutes and be prepared for some individual research and a follow up appointment.
- Applications for part-time and full-time work including resume preparation. Allow at6 least 15 minutes for the first appointment and a minimum of two days to produce finished documents.
- Referral to appropriate job pathway providers and training organizations.
- University and TAFE course planning, prioritising courses and maximising admission chances.
Our school has many staff that can assist with career advice, subject teachers can often provide valuable specific information about courses and about a student’s strengths and weaknesses. Learning Area Coordinators and Year Level Coordinators are all available to help students.
