Health and physical education is concerned with learning about, and through, healthy human development and change. By their very nature, knowledge, practices, skills, attitudes and values relating to health and physical activity contribute profoundly to the development of human identity, and to personal, societal and environmental health. Studies in health and physical education encompass a broad spectrum of knowledge relating to the wellbeing, health, behaviour, skills and dispositions, and physical, social and emotional development of individuals and members of communities. Through these knowledges, skills and dispositions, individuals, groups and communities make decisions about recreation, health, hygiene, fitness practices, work and occupational choices. Health and physical education contributes to lifelong learning in these important aspects and to a holistic understanding of life.Learning in health and physical education promotes the integration of physical, social, emotional, environmental and spiritual dimensions of living, and include areas such as health education, physical education, home economics, outdoor education and sport education. The health and physical education Learning Area aims to develop in all students: § an understanding of the interrelated nature of the physical, social, emotional and spiritual dimensions of life § the ability to make informed judgments about health and wellbeing for themselves and in their relations with others § a positive disposition towards lifelong participation in regular physical activity § the ability to enhance their own and others’ self-concept a wide range of skills which promote healthy active practices § skills for creating and maintaining positive interactions § safe and respectful behaviours and responsibility to maintain safe environments § a commitment to promoting equity, valuing diversity and justice, and establishing supportive learning environments § an exploration of future work in the health, education and training, food and hospitality, fitness, sport and recreation industries § an ability to critically reflect on, articulate and challenge social constructs with a view to improving health outcomes for themselves, others and communities § capacities to apply learning in health and physical education to other Learning Areas, to life in the wider community, to the virtual community, and in accessing further education and training.

Health and physical education is concerned with human development and emphasises the contribution of physical activity to growth and functioning, the development of a positive self-concept and relationships as well as the achievement of optimal health in individuals and communities. This learning area is organised around three strands that are developed progressively across the Bands of Schooling: - Physical activity and participation
- Personal and social development
- Health of individuals and communities
Health in the R-6 Campuses is an essential part of primary education with a focus on social development, personal development and interpersonal relationships. Health is an aspect of the classroom program across all classrooms and is taught both explicitly in health lessons and integrated across the curriculum and reinforced by classroom teachers in their day to day organization. Program AchieveThe R-6 Campus uses Program Achieve to actively teach the skills for success and develop these in their students. Physical EducationAt Strathalbyn R-6 site the Junior Primary students access physical education as a specialist subject. Our P.E teacher works with each class for an hour and a half each week and develops a wide range of physical skills with the students. The development of coordination in the early years facilitates the development of academic skills and compliments the classroom programs in the junior primary.Information about our physical education program can be obtained by contacting our physical education teacher or classroom teachers at the campus. |

Health and Physical Education at year 7-9 encompasses Physical Education, Home Economics, Health and Pastoral Care. All of these areas of study are included as the core curriculum.
Physical Education Learning in this curriculum area assists students to develop knowledge, processes and skills to make informed decisions about their own health and well-being. Students achieve this through group work and individual discovery. Studies in Physical Education focus on physical activity, health and fitness where students are encouraged to participate in a number of Pastoral Care/Health Education |

Health and Physical Education at year 10-12 encompasses Physical Education and Home Economics. Health and Physical Education units of work are studied by students to achieve their South Australian Certificate of Education SACE. Physical Education
Learning in this curriculum area is designed for students who gain enjoyment and satisfaction from involvement and achievement in physical activity. The emphasis in this course is on skill development through participation in a number of physical activities. Students are encouraged to participate in sporting activities designed to develop a positive approach to health physical fitness. A negotiated curriculum is studied by Year 10 students. Units of work are chosen from: Athletics, badminton, volleyball, golf, basketball, hockey, netball, orienteering, swimming, table tennis, indoor cricket, softball, touch football, football, soccer, weight training, tennis, fit to lead, basic anatomy, basic first aid and sports injuries. Units of work studied at Stage 1 Year 11 from: Badminton, volleyball, touch football, aquatics, netball, basketball, softball, sports search, hockey, fitness and sports nutrition, exercise physiology, drugs in sport. Units of work studied at Stage 2 Year 12 from: Badminton, volleyball, aquatics, golf, archery, tennis, touch football, exercise physiology, applied exercise physiology, sports injuries, nutrition and physical activity.
