At Eastern Fleurieu School the welfare of all students is important. The school structures, policies and personnel recruitment strategies are student centred so that most students travel through each campus smoothly and successfully. Classroom teachers provide both quality teaching and pastoral care appropriate to the needs of the majority of students.
At school, counselling covers a range of difficulties such as relationships with parents, teachers, peers, career advice, coping with stress caused by school or outside events, employment, youth allowance and of course goal setting and planning how to achieve those goals.Sometimes a young person can be challenged by particularly difficult circumstances and need extra support. This is more common in the adolescent age group. The school has two student counsellors, one based at and working in the 7-12 campus and the other R-6 cousellor based at the Strathalbyn R-6 site.
Counselling is a process of reflection for a person assisted by the counsellor. This means that success is more likely where the person has accepted that he/she both has a problem and needs help to find ways to resolve those problems. Self-referral is preferred but parent contact is also welcome.
Counselling is a confidential service. If a counsellor needs to discuss the problem with a third party you will be forewarned of this and be able to talk about what is to be revealed.
In severe cases the counselling service includes referral to appropriate agencies for more regular or more intensive assistance.
