Technology involves the creation of products, processes and systems to solve perceived problems or meet perceived needs. Design is integral to the creation of new technologies and involves changing one set of circumstances into another. Designing can be complex, drawing on established and new values, skills, techniques, knowledge and thinking to achieve particular goals. Design and technology education creates technologically literate learners who critique, design and make products, processes and systems. It can be powerfully interdisciplinary, being used in many different areas (eg artistic, cultural, environmental, ethical, experiential, historical, local, mathematical, personal, political and scientific) but bears no special relationship to any one of these. Design and Technology is a dynamic and diverse Learning Area, the content of which is very much determined by the local contexts and the needs of the children and students at Eastern Fleurieu School. |

This curriculum area is divided into two areas; Information Communication Technology (ICT) is incorporated into all curriculum areas. Students from Reception to Year Six use a wide range of technologies to enhance their learning. Students regularly use computers as a tool for learning in all curriculum areas. The technology and range of software available is designed to enhance and enrich teaching and learning. Specific computing skills are taught to enhance students' ability to use the computer as a tool and to present and punlish their learning. Students learn basic keyboarding skills, learn Internet netiquette and how to effectively use the Internet for research. We have a Computing Skill overview developed by staff which provides a framework in which to work. This is regularly reviewed and updated. |
There are many exciting opportunities for students to engage in Design & Technology in Years 7 to 9 at Eastern Fleurieu School. These include subjects such as Technical Studies, Computing, Multimedia and Clothing and Textiles.
The critiquing aspect of Design & Technology may involve students explaining the design features of a CO2 dragster they have built in Technical Studies or explaining the design factors behind a PowerPoint presentation they completed for Society & Environment.
The design component can be seen in action when students consider the different materials in Clothing & Textiles and what is the most appropriate design for a particular garment.
Evidence of the making strand can be seen in Technical Studies, Computing, Multimedia and Clothing & Textiles in the wide variety of tasks that students participate in. As well as Technology being taught in a range of subjects in Years 7 to 9, there are many opportunities for students to use their computing skills to produce work across the curriculum. |

There are a large number of opportunities for students to take part in Design & Technology subjects in the Senior School at Eastern Fleurieu School. While no specific Technology subjects are compulsory, students must include subjects from the Technology area at Year 10 and in SACE Stage 1 & 2 (according to the requirements of the SACE). At Year 10, students can choose from subjects in Technical Studies (Metal Engineering, Technical Graphics, Creative Woodwork, Cabinet Construction, Power Technology), Clothing and Textiles, Multimedia and Information Communication Technology.
At SACE Stage 1 subjects can be selected from Computing, Multimedia, Technical Studies (Automotive Technology, Technical Graphics, Welding & Fabrication, Furniture Construction, Human Powered Vehicles)
At SACE Stage 2 students can choose from Information Technology, Technical Studies (Furniture Construction, Technical Graphics, Welding & Fabrication, Automotive Technology), Information Processing & Publishing Personal Documents, Information Processing & Publishing Desktop Publishing and Multimedia (VET). |
